SWARTHMORE, Pa. - After the tropical storm forced the Swarthmore College field hockey team to wait another day, the Garnet knocked off visiting Widener University, 2-1, in the season opener on Thursday.
Shortly after a minute of play, sophomore
Deborah Kim tallied the first goal of the 2021 season, as
Martina Kampel collected an assist. Widener tied the game at one with a goal from Margaret Howe-Consiglio with a little over three minutes remaining in the half.
In the third frame with two and a half minutes remaining,
Heide Van Voorhis scored the winning goal for the Garnet.
Aron Lankford collected the win in net for the Garnet with five saves.
Swarthmore tallied ten shots, and seven shots on net in the opening game. In the last four games against the Pride, Swarthmore is 3-1. The Garnet open the season 1-0, while the Pride drop to 0-1.
The Garnet will host Arcadia at Clothier Field Stadium in their next match on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
