SALISBURY, Md. - Swarthmore College Volleyball split a pair of matches at the Salisbury Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon. After falling to the Christopher Newport University Captains in the first match of the day, the Garnet battled to a five-set victory over the Salisbury University Seagulls.
Swarthmore 1, Christopher Newport 3 (25-20, 7-25, 16-25, 14-25)
The Garnet wasted no time by earning a victory in the first. Tied at 12 points in the first set, Swarthmore scored three straight points.
Trisha Razdan notched a kill with the help of
Dani Pena, then
Chloe Mayhue recorded a service ace to make it a 14-12 lead for Swarthmore. An attacking error by Mackenzie Wright gave Swarthmore a 15-12 lead, forcing the Captains to call a timeout.Â

Kaylee Zhang and
Erin Kaye extended the Garnet lead to 22-17. Kaye recorded three kills on four attacks for a .750 hitting percentage in the first set.Â
In the match,
Sierra Tyson led the Garnet with 16 digs and collected three assists. Pena led Swarthmore with 22 assists and added eight digs. Mayhue added ten digs, seven kills, and a service ace against the Captains.
Swarthmore 3, Salisbury 2 (25-27, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13)
In a thrilling five set match, the Garnet and Seagulls exchanged victories in the first three sets, before Swarthmore won the last two for the match victory. Prior to today's match, Swarthmore struggled against Salsibury as the Garnet defeated the Seagulls for only the second time in program history.Â
Razdan led the Garnet with 19 kills, while Zhang and Mayhue added 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Swarthmore saw success in the serving department as Tyson tallied three service aces.
Grace Hegland added two service aces and Mayhue added one for the Garnet.
In the assist department, Pena led the way with 40 helpers, followed by Tyson (6) and Mayhue (5).
The Garnet move to 4-4 on the season while the Captains improve to 8-2 and the Seagulls fall to 6-4.
Swarthmore returns to the court on Saturday, September 25th at 1:00 p.m. for the Centennial Conference opening match. The Garnet host nationally-ranked and reigning national champions, Johns Hopkins, at Tarble Pavilion.Â
