Men's Soccer Drops Opening CC Match to No. 23 Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. - Swarthmore College Men's Soccer fell to No. 23 Johns Hopkins University, 2-0, in the opening game of Centennial Conference play on Saturday at Homewood Field.

The Garnet fall to 3-2-0 (0-1-0 CC) while the Blue Jays improve to 3-0-2 (1-0-0 CC).

Mid-way through the first half, Charley Ward had an opportunity but his shot was stopped by Blue Jays keeper Xander LeFevre. Swarthmore and Hopkins battled to a 0-0 tie at the half-time break. Each team recorded seven shots in the half, but Max Kral collected two saves and LeFevre stopped one.

The offense picked up early in the second half with Ian Whamond getting the first goal of the game for the Blue Jays, just a little over a minute into play. Moments later, Joe Barile looked to even the score but the senior forward's shot went wide. Just past the 60th minute, Oliver Garcia's shot went high over the crossbar. Aidan Dunphy added a goal to give Johns Hopkins a 2-0 edge with 20 minutes remaining in the game.

With time winding down in the game, Barile forced LeFevre to make another save, which went out for the Garnet to set up a corner. Leor Hecht set up the corner for the Garnet, which found Harry Nevins for an attempt to get Swarthmore within one. Unfortunately, Nevins' header went wide.

Swarthmore tallied 16 shots, while the Blue Jays recorded 16. In the net, Kral stopped six shots for the Garnet.

Swarthmore returns to field on Tuesday as they host Eastern University at 7:00 p.m. at Clothier Field Stadium.
