COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Swarthmore College Women's basketball opened up Centennial Conference action with a 59-36 victory over Ursinus College on Saturday.
The Garnet improve to 2-1 and 1-0 in CC action, while the Bears fall to 0-3 and 0-1 in league play. Swarthmore held Ursinus to 21.4% shooting from the field and caused 18 turnovers.
On the second shot of the day, Gabby Downs went for her second layup of the game, but was blocked by
Dana Bandurick. After a quarter of play, the Garnet were outscored 15-14, but held the Bears to less than 10 points in each quarter for the remainder of the game. In the opening seconds of the second quarter,
Carolina Lopez gave Swarthmore a lead with a three-pointer. Lopez's bucket was assisted by
Katelyn Becker.
Swarthmore held a 28-23 lead going into half-time, and the defense held the Bears to four points in the third quarter. Three straight buckets from
Norah Wingfield, Bandurick and Lopez gave Sawrthmore a 34-23 lead early in the fourth quarter. A pair of
Alyssa Hayashi free throws closed out the third for the Garnet with a 41-27 advantage.
In the fourth,
T Sallie stole the ball from Maria D'Auleio, which led for a fast break layup for Wingfield. Becker added a layup to give Swarthmore a 23 point lead with a minute left in play.
Off the bench,
Kim Kockenmeister led the Garnet with 17 points and added six rebounds. Bandurick added 15 points, nine rebounds and a block, while Lopez tallied seven points, a steal and a block. Wingfield finished the game with six points, while Becker and Hayashi added five each.
The Garnet will be back in action on Monday as they travel to take on Immaculata University. Tip-off for the non-conference game is set for 6:00 p.m.
