SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College Women's Basketball earned a hard fought victory over Arcadia University on Friday night at Tarble Pavilion.
With the 64-51 victory, the Garnet improve to 1-1, while the Knights fall to 0-2.
Arcadia opened the game on a five point run, but buckets
Norah Wingfield and
T Sallie cut the Knights lead down to one. The Garnet and Knights exchanged points in the first, but Arcadia took a 19-14 advantage into the opening break.
An 11-point burst from
Dana Bandurick and defensive pressure were the story in the second quarter. Swarthmore outscored Arcadia, 19-9, and took 33-28 point into the half time break. The Knights battled back to take a 43-41 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Sallie and Wingfield each scored eight points in the fourth, but it was Sallie who sparked the Garnet to victory. Just under the seven minute mark, Sallie got Swarthmore within three on a shot from beyond the arc. On the ensuing in-bounds play, Sallie stole the ball, grabbed the offensive board on his missed shot and put the ball back in the net to make the score, 49-48 Knights. After a defensive stop,
Kim Kockenmeister scored on a layup to give Swarthmore a 50-49 and the defense stepped up once again. Kockenmeister stole the ball, and Sallie knocked down a three-pointer to extend the Garnet lead.
Wingfield led all scorers with 16 points but added five rebounds and two blocks. Bandurick tallied 15 points, five boards, three steals and one block. Sallied ended the game with 14 points, four steals and three boards.
Katelyn Becker led the way with eight rebounds, while Kockenmeister and
Carolina Lopez added four boards. Tonight's victory was the first for
Dawn Grant at the helm of the Swarthmore program.
Swarthmore returns to action on November 20th as they open up Centennial Conference play at Ursinus College. Tip-off is set for 1pm.
