Women's Soccer Shuts Out CC Foe Washington (Md.)

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Swarthmore College Women's Soccer recorded a shut out victory over Washington College (Md.) in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday evening.

Mid-way though the first half, Anwyn Urquhart dribbled the ball down the middle of the field but was fouled by a pair of Washington defenders. Jacinta Fernandes-Brough took the free-kick, which was tipped out of bounds by Noah Smith. In the 20th minute, on the ensuing corner kick, Ally Scheve squeaked the ball inside the near post for a Swarthmore goal.

Less than a minute into the second half, Hope Neale scored her first collegiate goal. While falling down, the freshman had a quick touch with her left foot to inside of the far post that trickled in for the goal. The play started as Veronica Gibbons beat a defender on an attempted clear and kicked the ball back into the offensive half for the Garnet. In the 52nd minute, Allie Zitelli tested Smith as the freshman looked to add to the Garnet lead but was stopped.

Zitelli tallied a pair of shots, while Kim KockenmeisterAlice Onyango-Opiyo, and Charlotte Pohl each added a shot for the Garnet. Lillian Keller stopped all six shots that she faced in the victory.

The Garnet improve to 4-3-2 and 2-2-1 in conference play, while the Shorewoman fall to 5-5-2 and 1-3-2. Swarthmore returns to the pitch on Saturday as they host Muhlenberg College at 4:00 p.m.
