HAVERFORD, Pa. - Swarthmore College Women's Soccer concluded regular season play with a 1-0 loss in double overtime to Centennial Conference rival Haverford College.
Despite the defeat, the Garnet maintained the third seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs, thanks to No. 2 Johns Hopkins University's victory over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
Swarthmore came out of the gates hot at Haverford, firing three of the game's first four shots on net.
Kim Kockenmeister began the barrage less than three minutes in with an attempt to the left of the cage that was set aside by Fords' goalie Hannah Friedrich. Kockenmeister finished the day with three shots on goal.
The second half proved to be a more even affair, with each team tallying five shots. The Garnet's best offensive opportunity came in the 74th minute, when
Allie Zitelli stole a pass deep in the Haverford zone and got off a strong strike right to the well-positioned Friedrich.
For the visitors, goalie
Nora Greer held the Fords scoreless by stopping three attempts in the second half. She finished with five saves in her third consecutive start for Swarthmore.
In the first overtime frame, Kockenmeister looked to net her fourth sudden-victory game-winner of the season with a shot in the 96th minute, but this, too, was turned away by the Haverford keeper.
Haverford finally broke through on a penalty kick goal by Alyssa Saito at 108:10.
With the loss, the Garnet finished the regular season at 9-4-2 overall and 6-3-2 in Centennial Conference play. Haverford's victory pushed the team to 8-7-2 on the year and 5-4-1 in conference action.
Swarthmore will open postseason play on Friday at second-seeded McDaniel College. The kickoff time has yet to be announced.
