WESTMINISTER, Md. - Swarthmore College Women's Soccer fought hard but fell short to No. 7 and second-seeded McDaniel College, 3-0, in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon.
McDaniel wasted no time as Isabele Soares opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game. In the 23rd minute,
Amelia Mounts lined up and fired the equalizing goal just wide of the net. Midway through the first half, the Garnet added more pressure on the McDaniel defense as
Ally Scheve had a shot blocked at the top of the box. McDaniel went into the half with a 2-0 lead, thanks to a goal from Hannah Schepers in the 29th minute.
Swarthmore held the advantage with six corners, including four of them coming in the first half. In the 55th minute,
Alice Onyango-Opiyo forced keeper Katherine Carstensen into a tough save. The Garnet offense continued to add more pressure as
Megan Ruoff added another shot on goal.
Lillian Keller recorded three saves in the contest.
McDaniel added an insurance goal in the 79th minute as Schepers tallied her second goal of the afternoon. In their meeting earlier in the season, McDaniel knocked off Swarthmore 2-1 at Clothier Field on October 2nd.
The Garnet fall to 9-5-2, while the Green Terror improve to 17-1-0. In the NCAA's regional rankings used to determine NCAA Tournament berths, Swarthmore is currently ranked sixth in Region V. If the season is in fact over for Swarthmore, the Garnet would conclude the 2021 campaign with a .650 win percentage. The team posted a 20-15 (+5) goal differential and averaged 1.25 goals per game.
