Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Kampel's Lone Goal Leads Field Hockey to Victory

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - Martina Kampel's lone goal gave Swarthmore College Field Hockey a 1-0 victory over Centennial Conference rival Bryn Mawr College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Garnet improve to 11-5 on the season and 5-4 in conference play, while the Owls fall to 8-7 and 3-6.

After a scoreless first half, Swarthmore earned a corner in the 35th minute. Chelsea Semper lined up to take the penalty corner, inserted it to Kampel at the top of the circle and the junior did the rest. The forward faked one defender and fired a reverse shot into the back of the cage.

In the 54th minute, Aron Lankford kept it a 1-0 Garnet lead as the senior goalkeeper stopped a Courtney Cutone shot.

Both teams were pretty evenly matched throughout the contest. Swarthmore held the advantage with 5 penalty corners, while Bryn Mawr tallied three. The Garnet took nine shots compared to the four taken by the Owls. Kampel and Katherine Kohn each recorded two shots, while Callie Cho, Samantha Meacock, Quinn Basewitz, Jackie Crowley and Brooke Findlay all tallied a shot for the Garnet.

Lankford earned the victory in the net with a pair of saves. Emily Hapgood added a defensive save mid-way through the first quarter for the Swarthmore defense.

Swarthmore will close out the regular season on Saturday at No 17 Haverford College at 1:00 p.m. The Garnet currently sit in fifth place in the Centennial Conference standings with a shot at clinching a postseason berth in the regular season finale. With a win or a Franklin and Marshall College loss, the Garnet clinch its first Centennial Conference playoff spot since 2000.
