SWARTHMORE, Pa. - On Senior Day at Clothier Field Stadium, No. 24 Swarthmore Men's Soccer team defeated Dickinson in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 double overtime victory.
Woojin Shin scored his second goal of the match less than two minutes into the second overtime period to secure, come-from-behind, sudden-death winner for the Garnet.
A scoreless first half saw both teams threaten, but the action was mostly in the middle of the field. Swarthmore managed only three shots in the first half while Dickinson took one shot at the Swarthmore net. Dickinson took an early lead in the second half as Tyson Burling put the visitors up, 1-0. Just five minutes later, the Garnet answered as
Harry Nevins rose above the crowd and buried
Leo Hecht's driven corner kick to level matters. It was Nevins' team-high fifth goal of the season.
Burling once against gave the Red Devils the lead, just ten minutes later. In the 74th minute, Swarthmore responded Shin got the equalizer, for his third goal of the season.
After several late chances in regulation by the Garnet and a scoreless first overtime frame, Shin stepped up to give Swarthmore with victory in the second overtime. Hecht took a shot from the edge of the penalty area that Dickinson goalkeeper Andrew Kempe spilled. Shin's initial shot was saved, but was knocked back to him. On second effort, Shin planted the ball into the left side of the net to send the raucous Clothier Field crowd - and his teammates - into a frenzy.
The win was Swarthmore's first over Dickinson since 2014, and it clinched the Garnet's first Centennial Conference playoff bid since 2015. The Garnet improve to 10-3-2 and 5-2-1 in the conference with one regular season match to play. They are currently tied for 2nd in the Centennial with three other teams, all with 5-2-1 (16 points) Centennial records. Dickinson falls to 1-10-2 (0-7-1 CC).
This year's seniors would not be denied, as Shin, Nevins, and fellow seniors
Charley Ward,
Jason Meuth,
Ayo George,
Harrison Hotham, and
Conor Gill all worked tirelessly to achieve the milestone win.
Joe Barile sat out with injury, although he was able to make a ceremonial start, thanks to the gracious complicity of the Dickinson team. Following the opening kickoff, Dickinson intentionally knocked the ball out of bounds to allow the Garnet to substitute for Barile. It was an emotional moment on an emotional afternoon.
The Garnet travel up the Blue Route next Saturday, Oct. 30, to finish the regular season with a match against Centennial rivals Haverford. The match is slated for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff.
