LANCASTER, Pa. - A goal early in the second half helped the Swarthmore College Women's Soccer team knock off Franklin and Marshall College, 1-0, in Centennial Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
In the 53rd minute of play, the Garnet offense finally broke through as
Veronica Gibbons connected for her third goal of the season.
Megan Ruoff set up for the corner kick, and found Gibbons for the only goal of the afternoon. The corner kick was made possible by a Ruoff shot being saved and deflected out of play by Emily Senko, the keeper for the Diplomats.
Swarthmore looked to add an insurance goal in the 75th minute as
Amy Harris headed a ball wide of the net.
F&M held the advantage with 11 shots, while Swarthmore was only able to tally six.
Kim Kockenmeister,
Anwyn Urquhart and
Abby Chang each recorded a shot in the contest against F&M, who has been receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches National Poll.
Lillian Keller, who earned her third shutout of the season, recorded two saves.
The Garnet improve to 6-3-2 and 4-2-1 in conference play, while the Diplomats fall to 10-2-1 and 4-2-1. Swarthmore returns to the pitch on Wednesday as they welcome the University of Mary Washington to Clothier Field. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
