cSWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College Field Hockey earned another shut out victory as they defeated Centennial Conference foe Washington College (Md.), 3-0, on Wednesday night at Clothier Field Stadium.
The Garnet move to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Shorewomen drop to 5-6 and 1-3.
As time was nearing expiration in the first quarter,
Sophia Hitchingham deflected a
Grace Fuselier shot inside the cir to open the scoring. The goal with nine seconds remaining in the opening frame was the midfielder's first collegiate goal. The Garnet wasted no time to score in the second quarter as
Katherine Kohn tallied her fifth goal of the season. Less than a minute had passed as Kohn collected the ball in the circle from
Chelsea Semper and gave Swarthmore the two goal lead.
Swarthmore increased their lead going into the half as
Emily Hapgood knocked in her first goal of the year. Hapgood collected the loose ball in the circle and tipped the ball by Sasha Dennis to give the Garnet a 3-0 advantage.
Hitchingham,
Samantha Meacock and
Alexandra Kelleher led the way with two shots, while
Martina Kampel,
Deborah Kim,
Jackie Crowley,
Heide Van Voorhis and
Amanda Roessler each added one. Roessler and Meacock added crucial defensive saves in the circle.
Victoria Kimmel recorded three saves as the keeper earned her third shut out in the cage. Kimmel moves to 8-2 on the season.
Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Lancaster, Pa. to take on Franklin & Marshall College. The start time for the pivotal conference contest is set for 12:00 p.m.
