Garnet Pitch Way to Sweep Millsaps, No. 14 Ithaca

LEESBURG, Fla. – A pitching duel and a victory over a nationally ranked opponent led the Garnet on day two of the Spring Games on Sunday.
 
The Garnet notched a 2-1 victory over Millsaps College in game one, and a 7-3 decision over No. 14 Ithaca College in the night cap.
 
GAME ONE: Swarthmore 2, Millsaps 1
 
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, first-year Sam Hastings roped her first collegiate home run to left field. Lucy Decker sat the Majors down in the top half of the fourth and fifth inning with two fly-outs, a pair of line outs and a strikeout.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mika Maenaga worked an impressive six pitch walk. The junior scored the winning run on an RBI double to right center field by Gwen Glatz. The two-base hit by the sophomore scored Maenaga from first base.
 
Glatz finished the game 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a stolen base. After allowing two hits, a walk, striking out four and no runs in six innings of action, Decker received the win. The righty moves to 3-1 on the season.
 
GAME TWO: Swarthmore 7, No. 14 Ithaca 3
 
The Garnet knocked off the nationally ranked Bombers with a full team effort both at the plate and in the circle. Glatz and Meg Ozawa combined to strikeout 11 Ithaca batters.
 
Hastings worked a second inning walk that turned into being the first of three bases on balls for the Garnet. The first year advanced to second on back-to-back wild pitches by Beth Fleming. Kate Hart collected a four pitch walk, and stole second base. Laura Hirari knocked in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, the Garnet added two runs. The first came as Anika Rajamani scored from first on a Segel walk, and the Gabriella Natoli scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Decker.
 
Glatz, Rajamani, Natoli, and Hastings all scored in the top of the seventh to give Swarthmore the 7-3 lead over the Bombers.
 
In four innings in the circle, Glatz allowed four hits, one run and struck out six batters. Ozawa fanned five, while allowing four hits, two runs and one walk on her way to her first collegiate victory.
 
The Garnet improve to 5-2 on the season, while Millsaps falls to 11-6 and Ithaca drops to 0-2. Swarthmore returns to action on Tuesday as they take on Webster University at 11:00 a.m. and the College of Wooster at 1:30 p.m.
