LEESBURG, Fla. – Swarthmore College Softball collected a pair of victories at the PFX Spring Games on Tuesday. The Garnet defeated Webster University, 6-1, in game one and knocked off the College of Wooster, , in the night cap.
After dropping the first game of the Spring Games, the Garnet have won five consecutive games.
GAME ONE: Swarthmore 6, Webster 1
The Garnet jumped on the board first by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning.
Gwen Glatz, who started the game in the circle, opened the scoring with an RBI single to knock in
Mika Maenaga. With Glatz on second and
Gabriella Natoli on third,
Sam Hastings roped an RBI single to left field.
In a bases loaded and two out situation,
Kate Hart came through in a big spot for the Garnet. The leftfielder knocked a two run ground-rule double to left center, allowing Glatz and Hastings to cross the plate for a 4-0 Swarthmore lead.
Glatz gave up her lone run, which was unearned, in the bottom of the fifth as Breelyn Craig scored on a sacrifice fly by Abby Burroughs.
Hart extended the top of the sixth inning by reaching base on an error by the Gorloks third baseman. Natoli knocked in a pair of insurance runs with an RBI double to left center, her second base hit of the game.
In the complete game effort, Glatz allowed five hits, one walk and fanned three as the righty improved to 2-0 on the season. At the plate, the sophomore was 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored and an RBI.
GAME TWO: Swarthmore 4, Wooster 2
For the second straight game, the Garnet scored an opening inning run. Maenaga led the inning off with a single up the middle. After stealing second and third base, the junior scored as Natoli grounded out to shortstop.
In the bottom of the third inning,
Brooke Coneeny recorded a lead-off single to right center field. The first-year moved into scoring position at second base on a sacrifice bunt by
Eva Karolczak. Coneeny scored as Maenaga collected her second hit of the game with an RBI double to right field.
The Fighting Scots added two runs in the top of the fourth inning with back-to-back RBI base hits. Swarthmore received that run back in the bottom of the fourth as Coneeny connected on her second hit of the day. The Garnet held Wooster scoreless for the remainder of the game for their fifth straight victory.
Maenaga and Coneeny collected a pair of hits each in the game.
Meg Ozawa recorded her second victory after allowing one hit, striking out a pair in 3.1 innings for work.
Swarthmore returns to action on Wednesday as they take on Gordon College at 6:30 p.m.
