LEESBURG, Fla. – Swarthmore College Softball split the opening games of the Spring Games with an extra inning loss to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a decisive victory over Delaware Valley University on Saturday.
GAME ONE: RPI 8, Swarthmore 7 (F/11)
The Engineers took an early lead in the first inning with a bunt single by Jessica Torch, which scored Victoria DeStefano from second base.
Gwen Glatz kick started the Swarthmore offense as the sophomore walked and stole second base. Glatz advanced to third on a ground out to the pitcher by
Victoria Overbeck, and crossed the plate on an RBI single to right center by
Cassidy Cheong.
Kalli Segel rocketed a home run to right field to score Glatz and give Swarthmore its first lead of the game.
Brooke Coneeny notched her first collegiate hit with an RBI single to score Cheong from second as the Garnet closed the top half of the fourth with a 4-1 advantage. RPI added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at four.
In the eighth, ninth and tenth innings, the Garnet and Engineers each scored a run to extend the game to an 11th inning. Each Swarthmore player that was placed on second came around to score in those extra innings.
Glatz finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. The sophomore allowed nine hits, seven runs and fanned three in 10 innings in the circle. Cheong was 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored and a run batted in, and Overbeck recorded a 2-for-5 day from the plate.
GAME TWO: Swarthmore 10, Delaware Valley 2
The Garnet opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
Kalli Segel knocked in Glatz on an RBI single to right center field, and
Kate Hart knocked in a pair for the Garnet. Segel scored from third as Overbeck crossed from second on the Hart single to center field.
Del Val got on the board with an two run single to right center by Anastasia Yocum.
Lucy Decker knocked home
Anika Rajamani with a roped single to center. Decker was able to advance to second on the attempted throw out of Rajamani.
Swarthmore closed out the game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, all of singles except for one hit.
Alex Marsh, Glatz and Decker all knocked in RBI base hits for the Garnet.
Eva Karolczak rocketed a double down the left field line to score
Sam Wagner and Overbeck as the ninth and tenth runs of the game.
In the circle, Decker allowed six hits, two runs, two walks and struck out seven for the victory.
Swarthmore returns to action on Sunday with a pair of games in Florida. First pitch against Millsaps College is set for 11:00 a.m., while first pitch against Ithaca College is set for 1:15 p.m.
