Strong Second Half Pushes Garnet Past Blue Jays

SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse began spring break with a convincing 19-12 win at home against Elizabethtown College. Elizabethtown (3-3 overall) had a win previously against No. 15 Dickinson.
Swarthmore improved to 3-2 with the victory and has now won three straight. A hot start to the third quarter helped provide Swarthmore the separation it needed after going into the half tied at 7-7. The Garnet scored five straight goals to open up the period and never looked back.

Senior Jake Ross led Swarthmore with his second four-goal game in a row. Classmate Austin Chang added another hat trick for the third consecutive game. Kieran McKenna, Quin Seivold and Mason Evarts each added a pair. Ryan Izquierdo, Andrew Estella, Scott Eberle, Will Vespole, Zander Levitz and Jackson Brosgol all scored as well.

Izquierdo won 15 faceoffs while scooping up 10 ground balls. Liam Woerner collected five ground balls and caused a team-high three turnovers.

Goalie Frankie Dillon went the distance and recorded eight saves. Swarthmore as a team out-shot the visitors 40-28.

Swarthmore and Elizabethtown were tied at 4-4 in the second quarter, but Swarthmore strung together the next three goals and forced Elizabethtown to regroup with a timeout. The timeout worked for the Blue Jays and they scratched back into a 7-7 tie with three goals to close out the first half.

Head coach Pat Gress' halftime speech must have lit a fire under the Garnet as they then scored five straight goals out of the break. Levitz launched a missile from up top two minutes into the third to start the five-goal run.

Swarthmore continued to plug away and out-scored the Blue Jays 7-4 in the final period. Evarts put in the dagger with an empty-netter in the final minute.

Swarthmore travels to Bridgewater College in Virginia on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.
