LEESBURG, Fla. – Swarthmore College Softball extended its win streak to seven games with a pair of wins on Wednesday. The Garnet defeated Penn State Berks, 8-4, in the first game and Gordon College 11-1.
Swarthmore improves to 9-2 on the season and 7-1 on spring break. Penn State Berks falls to 1-6, while Gordon drops to 1-7. The Garnet open the season with its best start since they began the 2018 campaign with a 10-2 start.
GAME ONE: Swarthmore 8, Penn State Berks 4
After two scoreless innings, Penn State Berks plated two runs in the top of the third inning. The bottom half of the third inning saw
Gabriella Natoli tie the game with an RBI double to center field.
Cassidy Cheong knocked in Natoli to give the Garnet a lead that they would never look back on.
In the bottom of the fourth, Swarthmore extended their lead as three runs crossed the plate. Natoli knocked in the first run with an RBI single to center as
Gwen Glatz roped a single through the left side plating Laura Hirari.
Kalli Segel added the third run of the inning on single up the middle to score Natoli.
Bri Smith got Berks within two runs in the top of the fifth with a two run single to right field.
Mika Maenaga knocked in
Sam Hastings on fielder's choice for a Garnet 7-4 lead.
Segel added an RBI single up the middle to score Natoli for the third time in the game.
In 4.1 innings of work in the circle, Glatz allowed six hits, four runs, and a walk for the win.
Lucy Decker earned the save in 2.2. innings of work in the circle after allowing no hits, runs or hits.
GAME TWO: Swarthmore 11, Gordon 1
The Garnet opened the game with a seven spot in the first inning. Maenaga reached base on a four pitch walk, then stole second. The junior moved to third on a Hirari single. Natoli grounded out to the right side, allowing Maenaga to score the opening run. Glatz roped a home run to deep center field to give Swarthmore a 3-0 advantage.
Segel followed the home run with a single down the left field.
Kate Hart added an RBI double to left center to knock in
Sam Hastings. Hart came around to score on a single up the middle by
Brooke Coneeny. Maenaga knocked in both Coneeny and
Alex Marsh on a double to deep left center for Swarthmore's sixth and seventh runs of the inning.
Meg Ozawa recorded a perfect first inning, including one strikeout to lead off the bottom half of the inning.
Glatz reached base on an error and Segel walked to lead off the second inning. A Hastings double to center field advanced Segel to third and scored Glatz. With the bases loaded and one out, Marsh knocked in a pair of runs to stretch Swarthmore's lead to 10-0.
Ozawa sat the next three Fighting Scots down and added a second strikeout of the game. In five innings of action in the circle, the first-year allowed only two hits and one run. The righty walked three but struck out seven on her way to a personal third straight victory.
Hirai finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate and two runs scored. Glatz ended the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair batted in. Segel and Hastings added a pair of hits, while Maenaga, Natoli, Cheong, Hart, Coneeny and Marsh each finished with a hit in the game.
Swarthmore will close out the spring break trip with a pair of games on Friday. The Garnet will take on Saint Mary's College at 4:15 p.m. and Millikin University at 6:45 p.m.
