Garnet Split Games on Final Day of Spring Break Trip

LEESBURG, Fla –  Swarthmore College Softball closed out the spring break trip with a split on Friday. In the first game, Swarthmore fell to the University of Dubuque, 9-1, and defeated St. Mary's College (IN), 7-6, in game two.
 
GAME ONE: Dubuque 9, Swarthmore 1
 
The Garnet offense was stifled by the Spartans pitcher, Lexi Schmidt. The junior pitcher allowed only one run and seven hits. Dubuque opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning.  Deanna Origer knocked in a run on a double to left center.
 
In the bottom of the third inning, Gabriella Natoli scored on an error by Kylee Biedermann. The senior reached base on a single up the middle. Gwen Glatz advanced Natolia to second base with a single of her own to right field.
 
Natoli and Kalli Segel each finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate. Glatz, Sam Hastings and Marisa Mancini each contributed with a base hit.
 
Meg Ozawa allowed four hits, four runs and struck out a batter in three innings in the circle. Lucy Decker finished the game after allowing six hits and five runs in two innings of relief.
 
GAME TWO: Swarthmore 7, St. Mary's 6
 
The Garnet closed the spring break trip with a thrilling 7-6 victory over St. Mary's College (IN). In a double steal, Glatz stole second allowing Laura Hirari stole home to give Swarthmore a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
 
Natoli knocked in Mika Maenaga with an RBI single to center field in the top of the third inning. Glatz added an infield single to shortstop to score Natolia as the ball got away from the St. Mary's first baseman. Later in the third inning, Victoria Overbeck added an RBI single to score Glatz as Swarthmore stretched its lead to 4-0.
 
Segel rocketed a home run to left center field in the top of the fifth inning.  Hastings and Natolia each recorded an RBI single in the sixth inning for the Garnet. Segel finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate with Natoli and Mancini each collecting a pair of hits.
 
In the circle, Glatz collected the victory after allowing eight hits, six runs, four walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work. Ozawa recorded the save with a strikeout in an inning of work.
 
Swarthmore finished the spring break trip with a 8-2 record, including a victory over No. 14 Ithaca College. The Garnet improve to 10-2 on the season.
