SWARTHMORE, Pa.--The 2020 season opener came down to the wire for Swarthmore College Women's Lacrosse, but the Garnet fought off the visiting Widener University Pride 9-8.
A goal by Sydnie Schwarz with 3:01 left in the contest proved to be the game-winner. The Garnet held on defensively in the final three minutes to secure the win.
Defender Sadie Camilliere recorded six caused turnovers in the win and came up with a stop with less than a minute to go, stripping the ball away.
Senior Sophie Peipher tallied four goals in the Garnet win. Five other Garnet student-athletes scored as well. Schwarz, Kacy Hafertepe, Kyra Hall, Megan Jones and Mackenzie Frost netted a goal.
Hall, off a feed from Hafertepe put the Garnet ahead with 23:46 left in the first half. Peipher netted her first with 18:55 left in the first and then Hafertepe made it a 3-0 game three minutes later.
Swarthmore and Widener traded goals over the next 10 minutes and Widener closed the gap to one goal by halftime.
Hall located Frost for the finish to open the second half and give Swarthmore the 6-4 advantage.
The Garnet soon took advantage of two Widener yellow cards and scored player-up goals by Jones and Peipher.
Widener stormed back with three consecutive goals, tying the game at 8-8.
With three minutes left, Schwarz rolled the crease and dropped off a low shot to beat the Widener goalie.
