Reynolds Home Run Knocks Off Eastern

SWARTHMORE, Pa. –  Swarthmore College Baseball knocked off Eastern University in a non-conference battle, 5-3, on Friday.

The Garnet, improving to 2-0, wasted no time scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cole Beeker roped an opposite field double to score Luke Mutz from second base.

As Beeker stood on second, Michael Sepe grounded to shortstop but was able to reach base on the error. On the same play, Holden Bridge crossed the plate to give Swarthmore a 2-0 lead.

Swarthmore added a run in the third inning as Sepe crossed the plate on an RBI single by Coleson Hebble. The Eagles (2-2) crossed a pair of runs in the top half of the fourth inning as Matt McHale scored on a Brad Clemens single to center field. Clemens, who advanced to second base on a throw to the plate, scored on a base hit to left field by Shane Albertson.

In the top of the sixth inning, Albertson tied the game three with a solo home run to deep left field.

Once again, the Garnet wasted no time as Emmet Reynolds rocketed his first collegiate hit and home run to left field. In the same at-bat, the two-run home served as the game-winning hit for the Garnet.

Reynolds finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and two runs batted in. Mutz, Bridge, Beeker, Sepe, and Hebble collected a hit respectively for Swarthmore.

In two innings of work, Matthew Loomis earned the victory. The sophomore righty allowed a hit, one run, and struck out two for the Garnet. Oliver Hicks allowed two hits, and struck out four in three innings of action on the mound.

Swarthmore returns to the field on Saturday as New Jersey City University visits Swarthmore, Pa. for a non-conference match-up. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
