Garnet Earn Season Opening Victory Over Misericordia

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College Baseball opened the 2020 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Misiericordia University on Sunday.
 
Pitching led the way for both clubs as the Garnet and Cougars combined for only ten hits. Ryan WarmZach Camp, Sawyer Lake, and Jack Corkery combined for the shutout. Lake was credited with the win after 2.2 innings of work on the mound allowing no hits and striking out three.
 
Warm faced a jam in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded and no outs. Kyle Lennon looked to advance the runners but flew out to center field. Sean Boylan, who led the inning off with a walk, tried to score from third base on the fly out but was thrown out at the plate by Jared Gillen.
 
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Josh Bein crossed the plate for the only run of the game. Stepping to the plate with no runners on and one out, the freshman reached base on a walk. Sam Jacobson grounded out to Tyler Holzapfel at first, allowing Bein to advance to second base. A few pitches later, the freshman designated hitter stole third base and was awarded home after being interfered to by the third baseman, Billy Kerwien.
 
Corkery stepped to the mound in the top of the ninth inning to earn the save. The senior righty allowed one hit and struck out two in his 2020 debut.
 
Luke Mutz and Cole Beeker accounted for two hits each against the Cougars (1-3) pitching staff. Mutz recorded a bunt single in the seventh, while Beeker notched the first hit for the Garnet in the bottom of the first inning. Holden Bridge added a base hit in the bottom of the seventh and a walk for Swarthmore.
 
Warm pitched three innings of scoreless baseball, allowing two hits, two bases on balls while striking out one. Camp faced seven batters in 2.1 innings on the mound allowing two hits, no walks and a strike out.
 
Swarthmore (1-0) returns to the field on Friday, February 28th as they host Eastern University. First pitch against the Eagles is slated for 3:00 p.m.
