SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 33 Swarthmore College Men's Tennis improved to 4-1 with wins over Southern Virginia University and Muhlenberg College on Saturday, both by scores of 8-1.
Swarthmore 8, Southern Virginia 1
Swarthmore swept doubles play to open up the 9 a.m. home match. Thibault Vernier and John Lathrop won in top doubles 8-3, Noah Cheng and Weiyi Zhu took second doubles 8-6 and Grant Dill and Stephen Wong won 8-7 in third doubles with a 9-7 tiebreaker win.
In singles play, Swarthmore dropped the top flight but won the rest. Jiung Jung won second singles 6-4, 6-1. Lathrop earned his second victory of the day at 6-4, 6-4 in third singles. In fourth singles, Wong collected the 6-1, 6-0 win.
John Nichols-Daly collected a 7-5, 6-1 win, and Cheng won 6-1, 6-3.
Swarthmore 8, Muhlenberg 1
After defeating Southern Virginia, Swarthmore drove to Allentown and won that conference match in the same score as the day's first match.
This time the Garnet went 2-1 in doubles. Criss and Jung, and Zhao and Teoh earned the duo wins.
Swarthmore swept singles play with Vernier, Zhu and Zhao taking the top three matches. The final three were decided with pro sets. Dill won 8-5, Myers-Lipton 8-1 and Gruber swept his opponent 8-0.
Swarthmore plays at home against Ursinus next Saturday as well as on the road at NYU.
