SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 33 Swarthmore College Men's Tennis split its 2019-20 spring season opening day with a home win over Cabrini University and a near upset of No. 14 Carnegie Mellon University on the road.
Swarthmore 8, Cabrini 1
Indoors at the Mullan Tennis Center, Swarthmore rolled to an 8-1 win over the visiting Cavaliers. In doubles, Devan Geib and Neel Gupta partnered for an 8-3 win in the top flight.
Hellman Zhao and William Teoh took the second doubles match 8-1, and Max Gruber and Grant Dill took third doubles by the same score.
Zhao played as Swarthmore's number one in singles and won 6-1, 6-0. Dill, Josiah Myers-Lipton, and Geib all won with double bagels. Teoh added an 8-3 win in sixth singles.
Swarthmore 4, Carnegie Mellon 5
Swarthmore held a 2-1 lead after doubles play on the road at Carnegie Mellon. Thibault Vernier and John Lathrop won 8-5 in top doubles, and Noah Cheng and Weiyi Zhu claimed an 8-6 win in second doubles.
Swarthmore dropped the top three singles matches, but got points back in fourth and fifth singles. Vernier won 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in fourth singles, and freshman Stephen Wong proved victorious in fifth singles 7-5, 7-5.
The match came down to a closely contested sixth singles match. John Nichols-Daly won the first set 7-5, but fell 6-3, 7-5 in the next two sets.
Swarthmore resumes play against Southern Virginia on Saturday at 9 a.m.
