BALTIMORE, Md. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball fell to Johns Hopkins University, 63-35, in a Centennial Conference contest on Wednesday night.
Back-to-back baskets from
Kendall Tribus and
Kim Kockenmeister gave the Garnet an early 4-2 lead over the Blue Jays. Diarra Oden rallied to give Johns Hopkins the 6-5 lead with two consecutive scores.
Erin Cronin's free throws and Kockenmeister layup provided Swarthmore with a slight 9-6 advantage. The Garnet and Blue Jays exchange baskets throughout the remainder of the first frame, but Hopkins closed with a 19-11 lead.
Late in the second quarter,
Faith Nation recorded a layup to get the Garnet within six points of Hopkins. Elise Moore netted a free throw to extend the Blue Jays lead to 29-22.
After 20 minutes of play, the Garnet trailed the Blue Jays 31-23. Tribus and Cronin notched back-to-back layups as Swarthmore notched the first four points of the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Garnet defense forced Hopkins into a shot clock violation. On the ensuing possession,
Abigail Pirron knocked down a layup and was fouled by Emily Howie. The senior netted the extra point to keep Swarthmore within reach of the Blue Jays.
The Garnet netted 36 points in the paint and 12 points off of nine Hopkins turnovers.
Swarthmore was led by 8 points each from Tribus and Cronin. Tribus contributed 10 rebounds, six of which were on the defensive glass, and four assist. Cronin added six rebounds, while Pirron finished with five points and an offensive board.
Colleen Anderson finished with two points in 8 minutes of action. Nation,
Karinna Papke, and
Christina Holmgren each finished with a pair of points against Hopkins.
The Garnet (12-11, 9-9 CC) and Blue Jays (14-8, 11-6 CC) split the season series. After a bye on Saturday, the Garnet travel to Haverford College (19-3, 16-1 CC) to take on the Fords. Tip-off against the rival Fords is set for 6:00 p.m.
