HAVERFORD, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball fell to rival Haverford College, 55-36, in a mid-week Centennial Conference match-up on Wednesday.
Kendall Tribus opened the contest with a jumper to give Swarthmore the lead.
Christina Holmgren and
Kim Kockenmeister knocked down back to back jumpers to get the Garnet within a point of the rival Fords. Throughout the opening frame, Swarthmore and Haverford exchanged baskets with the Fords ending the quarter with a slight 19-17 advantage.
A second quarter Megan Furch basket gave the Fords a 21-17 lead, but shortly Holmgren answered for the Garnet.
Colleen Anderson followed suit with a jump shot tying the game at 21-21. Just under a minute later, the freshman added a three-pointer to give Swarthmore a 24-21 second quarter edge. A Julianna Clark turnover turned into two points by
Erin Cronin, allowing Swarthmore to take a 27-25 lead into the half-time break. The Garnet outscored the Fords, 10-6, in the second frame.
Haverford came out of the half-time break as another team as they scored nine of the first eleven points. The Fords took a 43-34 lead into the fourth quarter. Anna-Sophia Capizzi led the Fords in scoring with 17 points, while Clark netted 16 points points.
Swarthmore received eight points off the bench from Anderson. The freshman added three rebounds and a block in 14 minutes of action.
Tribus and Holmgren each finished with eight points. Tribus concluded the game with six boards and two assist, while Holmgren recorded two rebounds, two assist and a steal. Cronin added six rebounds, four points and two blocks against the Fords.
Kockenmeister ended the contest with seven points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal, while
Elizabeth Stiles added three steals, three assist and a point.
Karinna Papke added an assist against the Fords.
Swarthmore falls to 12-12 overall and 9-10 in conference play. Haverford, who was receiving votes in the latest D3Hoops.com poll, improves 21-3 overall and 18-1 in league action. The Garnet look to keep their postseason hopes alive with a victory on Saturday as they travel to Westminister, Md. Swarthmore, who will need some help from other conference teams, will close out the regular with a 1 p.m. tip-off against McDaniel.
