GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball dropped a hard-fought contest to No. 22 Gettysburg on Saturday.
The Garnet (11-8, 8-6 CC) fell to the Bullets (18-1, 14-0), 78-62. Swarthmore had several opportunities early in the first quarter off of two offensive rebounds.
Kim Kockenmeister's three-point attempt was rebounded by
Christina Holmgren, and Kockenmeister grabbed the board on a missed
Erin Cronin jumper.
Kockenmeister put the offensive board up for an easy layup. Back-to-back buckets from
Faith Nation gave Swarthmore a 10-9 lead mid-way through the first quarter. Gettysburg went on to score the next four points. With a little under 1:30 remaining in the first frame,
Colleen Anderson knocked down a three-pointer to even the game at 13.
Kendall Tribus hit a mid-range jumper with 7:06 remaining in the second quarter. Nation added an assist as Swarthmore closed to within four points of the Bullets. On the next possession, Cronin grabbed the ball off the offensive glass on a missed
Abigail Pirron jumper. Cronin immediately kicked the ball out to Pirron for a three-point attempt, which the senior rattled home. Holmgren recorded one of her three blocks in the second frame as Swarthmore trailed at half 35-26.
Gettysburg extended its lead out of half scoring the first four points of the third quarter. The Garnet and Bullets exchanged points to open the fourth quarter. A Nation layup and Kockenmeister free throw kept Swarthmore within striking distance.
Nation led the Garnet with a career high 23 points, and added four rebounds, two steals and an assist. The junior shot 7-of-9 from the charity line. Kockenmeister contributed with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Tribus finished the game with seven points, four rebounds and four steals.
Pirron finished with seven points and three rebounds as
Katee Kemether added four points.
The Garnet scored 12 points off of turnovers and received 24 points from the bench.
Swarthmore will be back in action on Tuesday as Dickinson comes to Tarble Pavilion. Tip-off against the Red Devils is set for 6:00 p.m.
