SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball dropped a hard fought Centennial Conference game to Dickinson College on Tuesday night.
The Garnet (11-9, 8-7 CC) fell to the Red Devils (10-10, 8-7 CC), 59-52, in a contest between two programs fighting for a postseason spot.
Immediately after Swarthmore won the tip-off,
Faith Nation passed the ball to
Kim Kockenmeister for an easy layup. On the following possession for the Garnet, Nation hit a mid-range jumper to give Swarthmore an early 4-0 lead.
Just with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Kockenmeister was fouled by Mia Kolb on an attempted three-pointer. The sophomore guard made all three shots from the free-throw line. As time was expiring in the first frame,
Erin Cronin found Nation for a jumper to give Swarthmore a 17-9 advantage.
In the second quarter,
Christina Holmgren recorded two of her five blocks on the Red Devils. The first block came as Emily Padalino looked to get Dickinson to within five points mid-way through the frame. As the Garnet led by ten points with over three minutes remaining in the stanza, the senior added her second block of the game. Kate Deutsch attempted a layup, but was met by Holmgren. Led by Holmgren, Swarthmore headed into the half-time break with a 28-18 lead.
Holmgren gave Swarthmore a 12-point lead to open the third quarter as the senior drove the lane for two points. Mid-way through the third quarter,
Kendall Tribus pulled down an crucial defense rebound for the Garnet. The junior's defensive board led to Kockenmeister hitting a mid-range jumper to give Swarthmore a 32-24 lead.
Kockenmeister finished the game with a career-high 19 points, and added three rebounds, three steals and two assist. Tribus added five points, five rebounds, two steals and a block.
Holmgren closed the game out with six rebounds, five blocks, four assist and two steals.
Colleen Anderson added 7 points, two rebounds and two assist in 12 minutes of action.
Abigail Pirron contributed with five rebounds and four steals.
Nation added 11 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Cronin ended the game with two points, two rebounds and two assist for the Garnet. Maura Leverone led the Red Devils with 17 points.
Swarthmore wastes no time getting back on the court as Muhlenberg visits Tarble Pavilion on Thursday night. Tip-off between the Garnet and Mules is set for 6:00 p.m.
