BRYN MAWR, Pa. – A big fourth quarter topped off a comeback as Swarthmore College Women's Basketball defeated Bryn Mawr College, 62-55, on Wednesday night.
Mid-way through the third quarter, the Garnet trailed by 18 points. The comeback began when
Elizabeth Stiles went 1-of-2 from the free throw line.
Kim Kockenmeister grabbed a rebound on a missed Halena Martin, which led to a Stiles layup on the ensuing possession.
Swarthmore's full-court defense stifled the Owls as
Christina Holmgren stole the ball from Martin. Holmgren added to the scoring streak on a layup with the help of Stiles. After
Erin Cronin knocked down layup to cut the Owls lead to nine points, Bryn Mawr was forced to call a timeout.
Stiles knocked down a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter. Kockenmeister added a long jumper to get Swarthmore within five points. The sophomore guard snagged an errant pass by Lipi Paladugu and tossed the ball to
Faith Nation for an attempted layup. Nation was unable to make the shot, but was fouled. The guard made both free throws as Swarthmore narrowed the deficit to three points.
A three-pointer from Kockenmeister and a jumper from Stiles cut the Owls lead to only one point with 6:25 left in the game. Nation converted three consecutive free throws to give Swarthmore a two-point lead. Kockenmeister forced Brendan Harrison into a turnover as the sophomore stole the ball and took it home for a fast break layup.
The Garnet (11-7, 8-5 CC) scored 27 points and forced the Owls (1-17, 0-13 CC) into ten turnovers in the final frame. Swarthmore's defense held Bryn Mawr to only 11 attempted field goals in the fourth quarter. Five of Kockenmeister's six steals occurred in the fourth quarter.
Nation finished the contest with a career high 21 points and added six rebounds and one steal. The junior guard shot 13-of-15 from the free throw line. Kockenmeister recorded nine points and six steals while Stiles contributed with 11 points, four steals and three assist.
Cronin knocked down eight points and six rebounds, while Holmgren contributed six points, three rebounds and a block. Swarthmore recorded 26 points off of turnovers, and 12 second chance points.
The Garnet return to action on Saturday as they travel to No. 22 Gettysburg. Tip-off against the nationally ranked Bullets is set for 1:00 p.m.
