Garnet Edge McDaniel in Centennial Battle

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball snapped a 13-game losing streak to McDaniel College as the Garnet edged the Green Terror 60-57 on Saturday afternoon at Tarble Pavilion.
 
On the opening possession, Dana Bandurick opened the scoring with a layup. McDaniel netted the next four points, but Kendall Tribus, with the help of Elizabeth Stiles, recorded a basket to even the contest. Mid-way through the first quarter with the Garnet down three, Kim Kockenmeister attempt at tying the game was off the mark. Bandurick grabbed the offensive board and put Swarthmore within one point of McDaniel.
 
Just under four minutes to play in the first half, Kockenmeister picked the pocket of Liv Storer. The guard missed the attempted jumper, but grabbed her own rebound and the sophomore put the ball away for two points.
 
As the third quarter was coming to a close, Stiles blocked an attempted jumper by Liv Storer. The senior guard grabbed the rebound, ran the ball down the court and found Bandurick for a fast break layup. Swarthmore took a brief 40-37 advantage. On the next possession, Storer hit a mid-range jumper as McDaniel reached within one point.
 
Christina Holmgren added a jumper from the elbow to give Swarthmore a three-point lead with less than 30-seconds remaining in the frame. McDaniel rushed down the court for one final shot and Natalie Mehl tied the game at 42-42 with a three-pointer as time expired.
 
Mehl opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, but the Garnet had an answer on the ensuing possession. Tribus grabbed another offensive rebound and wasted no time by getting another shot off to keep Swarthmore within a point. Kockenmeister knocked down a three-pointer with 7:36 remaining in the game to give Swarthmore the lead. Hannah Ravenscroft hit down a mid-range jumper as Swarthmore's lead was down to one. Just over 30-seconds remaining in the game, Kockenmeister sealed the game with a longer jumper.
 
Bandurick ended the contest with 24 points, 11 rebounds, three assist, two steals, and one block. Tribus contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and two steals, while stiles added five points, five assist and three rebounds.
 
Kockenmeister finished the game with nine points, eight rebounds and three steals off the bench. Holmgren finished the game with seven boards, four blocks and four points, while Abigail Pirron added four rebounds and a steal.
 
The Garnet held the Green Terror to 34.3% shooting from the field and ten second chance points. Swarthmore notched 13 points off of 16 McDaniel turnovers, and netted 40 points inside the paint.
 
Swarthmore's last victory over the Green Terror (6-10, 3-9 CC). was on January 10th, 2013. With the victory, the Garnet moved to fourth place in the Centennial Conference standings. Swarthmore improves to 10-7 overall, which is the most by a Garnet team since the 2014-15 season and 7-5 in conference play.
 
The Garnet take a short trip to Bryn Mawr College to take on the Centennial foe. Swarthmore looks to sweep the season series against the Owls. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
