Women's Basketball Edges Ursinus; Snap Streak

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball edged out visiting Ursinus College Bears, 49-46, on Wednesday night.
 
The Garnet fell behind in the first quarter, 16-11, but held the Bears to only four points in the second frame. Erin Cronin opened the scoring the second quarter with a layup, and Christina Holmgren added a block two possessions later for the Garnet.
 
Dana Bandurick snatched the ball from Gabby Downs, and laid the ball in for two points. Back-to-back buckets from the freshman gave Swarthmore a 21-20 advantage.
 
As Ursinus looked to tie the game up mid-way through the third quarter, Kendall Tribus grabbed a massive defensive rebound. The junior knocked down a mid-range jumper to give Swarthmore a four point lead. Francesca Bogiatzis inched the Bears to within one point with 3:28 remaining.
 
Tribus grabbed the missed Holmgren rebound, and was fouled on the attempted shot. She hit both free-throws as the Garnet stretched its lead to three points.
 
Late in the fourth quarter, Marisa Morano attempted to drive the lane but was met by Bandurick. The freshman blocked the shot as the Bears tried to close the 47-43 deficit.
 
The pair of Bandurick and Tribus led the Garnet as each player netted double-digit points. Bandurick finished with nine rebounds, five steals, four blocks and a team-high 14 points Tribus recorded her second double-double of the season as the junior added 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
Elizabeth Stiles added six points and three boards off the bench, while Faith Nation finished with eight rebounds and four points.
 
With the victory, the Garnet (9-7, 6-5 CC) snapped a nine game losing streak to the Bears (6-10, 5-6 CC). The last time Swarthmore defeated Ursinus was on February 5th, 2015, as the Garnet earned a 65-56 decision.
 
Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday as McDaniel comes to town in a crucial Centennial Conference game. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
