HAVERFORD, Pa. - No. 4-seed Swarthmore College Softball, in its first Centennial Conference Playoff game since 2010, lost 7-2 to No. 1-seed Haverford.
The Garnet (21-14) will get a chance to bounce back in the two-loss-elimination tournament. Swarthmore will play No. 3-seed Ursinus on Friday at 1 p.m. at Haverford because Ursinus also lost its first game 9-1 against No. 2-seed Dickinson. Swarthmore split 1-1 with the Bears in the regular season, winning 13-11 and losing 4-3. The Garnet have now lost to Haverford all three times that the two teams have met.
Swarthmore took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a double by freshman
Gwen Glatz that scored senior
Marit Vike.
The Fords bounced back quickly, scoring one in the second on an error and three more in the third on a home run.
The Garnet did not give up as junior
Gabriella Natoli and sophomore
Maddie Bowe led off the fourth inning with a double and single, respectively. Natoli eventually scored from third by advancing home when Bowe was caught trying to steal second. Bowe led the Garnet with two hits in the game. Swarthmore had seven hits, and Haverford had 10.
Haverford got all the insurance it needed with another three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.
Neither team scored throughout the remainder of the game. Glatz pitched three innings for Swarthmore and allowed just one run.
Again, Swarthmore plays Ursinus on Friday at 1 p.m. at Haverford as the Fords will host the remainder of the tournament. The winner of Friday's game moves on in the elimination bracket to play Saturday, and the loser is eliminated from the playoffs. The tournament is set to be completed on Saturday.
