Swarthmore Advances In Centennial Playoffs

HAVERFORD, Pa.  - Swarthmore College Softball rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning on Friday to defeat Ursinus 6-5 and stay alive in the Centennial Conference Tournament.

The No. 4-seed Garnet (22-14) will have a rematch against No. 1-seed Haverford at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The game is at Haverford, but Swarthmore will serve as the home team in the win-or-go-home game. The winner will play No. 2-seed Dickinson in the Conference Championship matchup on Saturday. Dickinson will only have to win once to take the title because they haven't lost a game in the tournament. However, Swarthmore would have to defeat the Red Devils twice. Both games would be Saturday at Haverford.

Ursinus took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on Saturday, but freshman Gwen Glatz was called on in relief to pitch for Swarthmore and shut down the Bears for the rest of the game. She pitched 5.1 innings and allowed just three hits and no earned runs. Her record is 9-2 this season.

The Garnet quickly responded to their opponent's big inning with three in the top of the third. Freshman Laura Hirai and senior Marit Vike hit back-to-back triples to lead off the inning, and sophomore Mike Maenaga followed them with an RBI single. Junior Kalli Segel had the third RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Swarthmore came to bat in the top of the seventh down 4-3. The team's season was on the line, and Hirai and Vike once again led off with hits. Both of them singled. Hirai scored the tying run on the next batter with some good base running. Then Maenaga and Vike scored the go-ahead runs as Glatz reached on an error by the right fielder.

Ursinus scored one more run in the seventh and left the tying run on third.

Vike moved into third all-time at Swarthmore with three hits on Saturday to give her 158 for her career.

Again, Swarthmore's next game in the Centennial Playoffs is on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Haverford.
