Garnet Clinch First Playoff Berth Since 2010

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College Softball secured one of four spots in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the first time since 2010 by splitting a doubleheader with Dickinson on Saturday at Clothier Field. The playoffs are set to begin Tuesday and continue on Friday and Saturday.

The Garnet are 21-12 overall and 9-6 in the conference. They'll head to Ursinus on Sunday to complete a game that was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning on April 9. The winner will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament, and the loser takes the No. 4 seed. Swarthmore currently leads 3-1 in that game, but Ursinus has runners on first and second with no outs.

Haverford and Dickinson are currently the top two seeds in the conference. Haverford will be the No. 1 seed and host if it beats Gettysburg on Sunday in a game that was also suspended in the middle of the action on April 18. If the Garnet beat the Bears, the Fords will host no matter what happens in their game. But if both Haverford and Swarthmore lose on Sunday, then the tournament will be at Dicksinson in Carlisle, Pa.

Saturday was Senior Day for Swarthmore Softball. The team honored Marit Vike, Hannah Thompson and Elizabeth Curcio.

Game One: Dickinson 2, Swarthmore 0

This game was a pitcher's duel between two of the conference's best: Garnet sophomore Maddie Bowe and Red Devils senior Madison Milaszewski.

Milaszewski took the win and improved to 11-5 with a Centennial-leading 1.16 ERA this season. Bowe went the distance and allowed just one earned run but fell to 7-5. Her 1.91 ERA is fifth in the conference. Neither pitcher walked a batter in the game, and neither team made an error.

Thompson and junior Kalli Segel had Swarthmore's two hits.

The game lasted just one hour and 15 minutes. Dickinson scored its runs in the first and seventh innings.

Game Two: Swarthmore 3, Dickinson 2 (9 Innings)

The Red Devils opted to use Milaszewski again in Game 2 and the Garnet seemed to have her figured out early on.

In the first inning, Garnet sophomore Mika Maenaga singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Gwen Glatz walked and stole second. Segel drove in both runners on a single to center field that would eventually prove to be the hit that sealed a playoff spot for the Garnet.

Glatz pitched a season-high nine innings and earned her team-high eighth win of the year. She has just two losses.

Glatz only allowed an earned run in the second inning, but an unearned run tied the game in the top of the seventh to force extras.

In the bottom of the ninth inning with the scored tied 2-2, Swarthmore junior Gabriella Natoli reached first on an error and sophomore Victoria Overbeck was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. The Red Devils pulled Milaszewski after 15.1 innings pitched on the day.

Garnet sophomore Lucy Decker loaded the bases by reaching on an error off the next pitcher. Ultimately, junior Alex Marsh came to bat for the first time all day with the bases loaded and two outs. She walked in five pitches to earn the game-winning RBI.

Swarthmore won the game with just four hits. Dickinson had eight. Segel went 2-for-4.
