Garnet Cool Off With Two Losses Against Haverford

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College Softball had a seven-game win streak snapped on Tuesday with a pair of losses against Haverford.

The Garnet (17-10, 5-4) fall to third place in the Centennial Conference standings with seven such games left on their schedule.

Game One: Haverford 5, Swarthmore 2

The Garnet couldn't quite get the bats going in Game 1 as senior Marit Vike and freshman Laura Hirai had the team's only hits. Hirai's hit was a triple, and Vike added two stolen bases to the box score.

Freshman Gwen Glatz and sophomore Mika Maenaga had Swarthmore's RBIs on sacrifice flies.

The Fords scattered their runs by scoring one in the first, second and seventh inning as well as two in the third.

Garnet sophomore Maddie Bowe pitched all seven innings and had just two earned runs, but she fell to 5-4 this season.

Haverford had 10 hits and didn't make an error to pick up the win.

Game Two: Haverford 8, Swarthmore 3

Swarthmore allowed four runs in the third and three in the fourth to fall behind 7-1. The Garnet scored their run in the third on a bases-loaded single by sophomore Lucy Decker.

The Garnet had 10 hits in the loss but could only plate two more runners. Senior Elizabeth Curcio singled to left field and drove in sophomore Victoria Overbeck and senior Hannah Thompson.

Juniors Kalli Segel and Gabriella Natoli had two hits apiece for the Garnet.

Glatz entered the circle in relief and pitched 3.1 innings of one-run softball.

Swarthmore takes on McDaniel at Clothier Field in a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
