SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball closed out the 2019 year with a triumphant victory over Penn State Abington on Thursday at Tarble Pavilion.
The Garnet trounced the Nittany Lions 65-32 in the final non-conference contest of the season. Swarthmore improved to 5-4, while Penn State Abington dropped to 3-4.
The Nittany Lions were held to single digits in each of the quarters, except for the third frame in which they scored 11 points. Swarthmore entered the half-time break with a 19-point lead. The Garnet forced Penn State Abington into 17 turnovers.
In the third quarter, after knocking down a jumpshot,
Dana Bandurick stole an attempted pass from Iman Richmond and immediately turned the steal into two points. The freshman forward forced another turnover by grabbing a pass from Ashya Gaddy right out of the air. Bandurick was fouled on an attempted layup, and made of one of two form the line.
Swarthmore grabbed 65 rebounds, including 24 on the offensive glass. Three members of the Garnet reached double figures in rebounds. Bandurick led the Garnet as the freshman guard grabbed 17 boards, while
Kendall Tribus picked up 11 and
Christina Holmgren added 10 boards.
Bandurick finished the game with her third consecutive double-double as she posted 20 points, two blocks, two steals and an assist. Tribus added 10 points, a block, one steal and two assist, while
Elizabeth Stiles contributed with eight points and five rebounds. The senior guard added four assist and two steals.
Erin Cronin and
Faith Nation contributed four points each, while
Colleen Anderson added three points.
Katee Kemether finished the game with four rebounds, a pair of rebounds and two points.
Kim Kockenmeister recorded five points, three rebounds, and one steal in 20 minutes of action.
Penn State Abington was led by 14 points and seven rebounds from Sydney Barrow.
With the victory, Swarthmore evens the series with Penn State Abington at a game a piece. The pair last met on November 13, 2018 when the Nittany Lions earned a 69-54 victory. Swarthmore returns to the court in the new year as they travel to Lancaster, Pa. to take on Franklin and Marshall College. Tip-off for the January 4 Centennial Conference contest is set for 1:00 p.m.
