SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball snapped a ten-game losing streak to Johns Hopkins University with a 46-44 victory on Tuesday night at Tarble Pavilion.
The first quarter was a defensive battled as Swarthmore and Hopkins combined for 19 points. Swarthmore, who did not attempt a three-point shot in the second frame, held a 18-12 advantage heading into the locker room.
Swarthmore's defense intensified in the third quarter. Minutes into the third frame,
Kendall Tribus stole the ball from Lyndsey Hoyd, and the junior passed it to
Dana Bandurick for an easy fast break layup.
A few minutes later, Bandurick intercepted the inbound by Diarra Oden and laid it home for an easy bucket. Hopkins kept the game close as they relied on the points from inside the paint with six of their 15 points coming from within the lane.
Bandurick notched a second consecutive double-double as the freshman recorded 23 points and ten rebounds. The guard added a season-high five steals and two blocks against the Blue Jays. Tribus finished the game with nine points on three-of-eight shooting from the field.
Swarthmore and Hopkins each netted ten points off of turnovers. The Garnet earned 14 points off the bench, including a team leading six points from
Colleen Anderson. The freshman was two-of-three from distance and added a block in eleven minutes of action.
Erin Cronin and
Abigail Pirron contributed four points off the bench.
Prior to Tuesday's victory, the Garnet last defeated the Blue Jays 75-47 in Baltimore on January 30th, 2014.
The Garnet improve to 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in Centennial action. The Blue Jays fall to 5-4 and 3-2 in league play. Swarthmore returns to action on Thursday as they host Penn State Abington in the final game before winter break. Tip-off for the non-conference contest is set for 6:00 p.m.
