Women's Basketball Challenges Gettysburg

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball team challenged Centennial Conference favorite Gettysburg College in a 61-50 loss on Saturday night at Tarble Pavilion.

Dana Bandurick opened the scoring for the Garnet with a layup just a minute into the game. Abigail Pirron netted four consecutive points as Swarthmore cut the deficit to three points midway through the second quarter.

A Bandurick layup with less than a minute remaining provided the Garnet with a short one-point lead. Carly Rice drove the ball down the court to beat the clock with a layup as time was expiring for a Gettysburg 27-26 lead.

After the half, Swarthmore shortly took a lead behind four points from Elizabeth Stiles. The defense intensified for the Garnet as Bandurick blocked a drive by Meredith Brown.

In 29 minutes off the bench, Pirron led Garnet scorers with 14 points. The senior added five rebounds, two steals and an assist against the Bullets. Bandurick finished the game with 11 points, eight boards, two steals and one assist.

Christina Holmgren recorded six rebounds, all on the defensive glass, and added three blocks for the Garnet. Sophomore forward Erin Cronin netted seven points and five boards in 18 minutes of action off the bench. Stiles finished the game with nine points, three rebounds and one assist.

In the last eight matchups, Swarthmore surrendered at least 70 points to Gettysburg. The Bullets were held to 39.3% shooting from the field, including four of 18 in the second frame.

The Garnet fall to 1-3 and 0-1 in league action, while the Bullets improved to 4-1 overall with a 2-0 conference record. Swarthmore looks to rebound as they host Washington (Md.) College on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in Centennial play.
