SWARTHMORE, Pa. – After trailing at half, the Swarthmore College Women's Basketball earned a hard fought 61-55 victory over visiting Washington College (Md.) on Tuesday night at Tarble Pavilion.
The Garnet came out of the half-time break with a vengeance as they netted seven of the first ten points.
Dana Bandurick caused havoc by forcing a turnover on Taylor Samuels, which led to an easy fast break layup by the freshman guard.
Mid-way through the third quarter, Crystal Jones drove the lane trying to tie the game but was denied by Bandurick. On the next play, the freshman recorded an easy layup from
Christina Holmgren as Swarthmore took a 39-34 advantage.
The ensuing possession saw Holmgren block a layup attempt by Cassidy Quattro. Swarthmore finished the game with five blocks.
Swarthmore earned a three point lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as Holmgren recorded a mid-range jumper.
Bandurick led all Garnet scorers with 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while
Elizabeth Stiles added 12 points. Stiles, in 31 minutes of action, shot three of four from the field and five of eight from the charity line. The senior added six rebounds in the contest.
Holmgren finished the game with nine boards, eight points, two steals and one block. All the seniors rebounds came on the defensive glass.
Kendall Tribus notched 11 points and seven rebounds in the Centennial Conference victory.
The victory snapped a five game losing streak to the Shorewomen. Swarthmore last defeated Washington on November 22, 2016 in a 77-70 contest at Tarble Pavilion. Swarthmore improves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while Washington drops to 4-2 and 1-2. After a week off, the Garnet will travel to take on Ursinus at 8:00 p.m. on December 4th.
