SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 21 Swarthmore College Women's Soccer started out the 2018 campaign on the right foot, beating the visiting Pfeiffer University Falcons 1-0 on Friday evening.
The Garnet controlled possession and peppered the Falcons with 18 shots. The Garnet also limited the Falcons to just three attempts and only one on goal.
The game's only goal came in the 23rd minute when senior forward
Marin McCoy connected with junior winger
Sydney Covitz on a nice give-and-go. McCoy deked her way through the midfield and fed a pass ahead to Covitz on the right side of the box. Covitz corralled the pass and found McCoy with some space around her right at the PK hash. McCoy slid a right-footed shot into the back left corner of the goal for Swarthmore's first tally of the new season.
Swarthmore went deep into its bench on Friday, allowing 16 reserves to see playing time including seven freshmen who got invaluable playing time in their first collegiate game.
Senior
Amy Shmoys played the first half in goal and was only really tested once. Freshman
Chantal Reyes closed out the final 45 minutes in goal.
The Garnet resume play on Sunday, hosting Stevens in an 11 a.m. game.
