Box Score MALIBU, Calif.—No. 29 Swarthmore College Men's Tennis edged the No. 23 Sewanee: The University of the South 5-4 on Friday. The match concluded Swarthmore's trip to California, and the Garnet went 2-5 on the trip, playing split-squad matches and facing some of the toughest competition they'll see all season. Swarthmore has played against six nationally-ranked teams since March 10 and two opponents hwo compete outside of NCAA Division III.
Swarthmore led off with a sweep of doubles play against Sewanee.
Mark Fallati and
Josh Powell won 8-6,
John Lathrop and
Thibault Vernier also won 8-6, and
Jiung Jung and
Blake Oetting took third doubles 8-3.
The Garnet earned singles wins in the fourth and sixth flights.
Josh Powell, at fourth singles, lost his first set, but bounced back with a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set and a 6-1 rout in the third set.
John Lathrop dropped his first set in a tiebreaker game, but then won 6-4, 6-2 in the next two sets.
Swarthmore returns to action on March 27 against Centennial opponent Dickinson College.
