Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lax Wins OT Thriller

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Lacrosse's home opener featured a back-and-forth battle with the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen that was resolved with an overtime game-winner by Elizabeth Wainwright. Swarthmore scored the golden goal five minutes into overtime to win the non-conference game 14-13.

Lebanon Valley had three free-position attempts with less than two minutes left in the first overtime period. The Dutchmen's first attempt sailed high, the second was saved by Swarthmore goalie Betsy Cohen, who had 15 saves, and the third attempt was fumbled, giving Swarthmore possession with 1:15 to go. Swarthmore junior Tess Wild darted downfield after recovering the loose ball and sent a pass ahead to Wainwright. Wainwright charged and fired off the game-winning shot as two defenders converged on her. Wainwright had been held scoreless up to that point but picked the perfect time to end the scoring drought.

Wild had a fantastic performance, scoring five goals and registering two assists and four draw controls.

Julia Ostrowski, Kathryn Restrepo and Mackenzie Frost all notched a pair of goals. Wainwright, Taylor Chiang and Sydnie Schwarz each scored one.

Swarthmore trailed 5-2 in the first half but struck for four straight goals to reclaim the lead at 6-5 just three seconds before the break.

Swarthmore's lead reached 9-6 with 23:27 to play, but Leb Val would not go away. The Dutchmen scored a free-position goal with 2:06 to go that evened the count at 12-12. Wild then scored her fifth of the game with just 56 seconds to go. However, Lebanon Valley earned another free-position shot in the waning seconds of the game and tied the score at 13-13 with five seconds left, forcing overtime.

The Garnet improved to 2-0 with the win and now get ready to travel to Hilton Head, S.C. to play Nichols College on Tuesday.
