SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 7 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball fought off the McDaniel College Green Terror on Saturday afternoon 60-54.
The two competitors are on complete opposite ends of the Centennial Conference standings with Swarthmore in a tie for first with a 12-2 conference record and McDaniel in last at 1-13. However, every team in the conference puts out its best effort against the Garnet, last year's league champs, and McDaniel was certainly persistent on Saturday.
Swarthmore started off with an early six-point lead but that was the biggest advantage it would have in the contest. The tables turned and McDaniel soon led by six with 14:28 to play in the first half. The Garnet trailed for almost all of the rest of the half, but got a confidence boost right before halftime. With 1:05 left,
Nate Shafer came up with a huge block, one of his three on the day, and
Cam Wiley took the rebound for a run and finished with an acrobatic layup on the other end.
Jim Lammers followed with a 3-pointer off another Shafer block, and Swarthmore went into the break up by two.
The Garnet led for the first nine minutes of the second before McDaniel regained the lead. A pair of free-throws from Shafer gave Swarthmore the lead with 5:56 to go.
Robbie Walsh blocked a shot on the other end and
Zack Yonda sank a 3-pointer to put Swarthmore up by four with 4:55 left.
McDaniel hung around and tied the game at 53-53 with one minute to go. Swarthmore's
Ryan Ingram hit the biggest shot of the game with 43 seconds left to go, knocking down a deep 3-pointer to seal the game. Ingram led Swarthmore with 14 points in the start.
Zac O'Dell scored nine points and had eight rebounds and four blocks. Swarthmore finished with 10 blocks in the game, reaching 10 for the third time this season (and the second time against McDaniel this year).
Swarthmore returns to the court on Wednesday at Ursinus College for a 7:30 p.m. game.
