Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Takes Haverford To The Brink

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Wednesday night's women's basketball game between Swarthmore College and the visiting Haverford College lived up to the expectations of what a rivalry game should be. Swarthmore gave its fellow TriCo institution a run for its money before getting edged by Haverford 59-58.

Swarthmore's Raina Williams capped off a wild ending to the game with a shot in the paint that went in with a half second left that would have given Swarthmore the win. However, the basketball was waved off because of a controversial traveling violation call. Had the basket counted, Swarthmore (4-20 on the season) would have dramatically upset one of the top teams in the Centennial Conference and in the region (Haverford is 20-5).

Swarthmore trailed by four points with 21 seconds to go, but freshman Kendall Tribus nailed a deep 3-pointer from the left wing to make it a one-point game with 16 seconds to go. Haverford took a timeout and advanced the ball into the front court. However, after the inbound, Swarthmore's defensive pressure forced Haverford's point guard to lose control of the ball; it skittered into the backcourt resulting in turning possession back over to Swarthmore. With the chance to win on the final shot, Christina Holmgren found Williams at the elbow. Williams pivoted to get past Haverford's center, stepped into the lane and floated a shot into the hoop. The shot was heartbreakingly waved off immediately.

Williams finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Isabelle Ewart and Abigail Pirron led Swarthmore with 13 points each, going a combined 5-for-9 from 3-point range. As a whole, the Garnet knocked down 8-of-14 3-pointers, a season-best 57.1 percent mark.

Tribus finished with eight points and, in addition to the clutch triple with 16 seconds left, had a spectacular buzzer-beating 3-pointer from nearly 40 feet away.

Audra Woodside chipped in seven, Christina Holmgren had six and Bridgett Scott had two points.

Swarthmore darted out to a 16-11 lead in the first quarter but trailed by seven at halftime. The Garnet took over in the third, outscoring the Fords 16-9.

Swarthmore concludes the 2017-18 season at home on Saturday and will be honoring its seniors prior to the 1 p.m. tipoff.
