GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Swarthmore College Volleyball picked up its first five-set win of the season on Friday, defeating Gettysburg College 29-27, 25-17, 16-25, 15-25, 20-18.
There were 10 lead changes in the first set before the Garnet (13-6, 6-2) ultimately scored the final two points to win it. The set was never separated by more than five points.
Swarthmore also beat the Bullets (16-6, 4-5) in the second set, taking 16 of 19 points during the middle of it.
Gettysburg won the third and fourth sets convincingly which forced the match to five sets.
The Garnet won the first three points in the last set, but the Bullets came back to take a 6-5 lead. There were several lead changes and ties until junior outside hitter
Mehra den Braven recorded her match-high 22nd dig to take home the victory for Swarthmore.
Garnet senior libero
Sarah Girard had 29 digs, and den Braven added 24 digs of her own. It was Den Braven's second 20-20 game of the season.
Sophomore setter
Alyssa Nathan had a match-high 52 assists to accompany 19 digs, three block assists and three kills.
Junior middle blockers
Emma Morgan-Bennett and
Isabelle Andrews contributed with 15 kills and 10 kills respectively. Morgan-Bennett had a .300 hitting percentage with five total blocks, and Andrews had a team-best .333 hitting percentage with four total blocks.
Freshman middle blocker
Josie Thrasher played five sets in a match for the first time in her career and had a career-high five kills.
The Garnet are now in third place in the Centennial Conference with two conference matches remaining against fourth-place Muhlenberg College and eighth-place Haverford College.
Swarthmore's next matches are on Saturday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. against Susquehanna University and Wesleyan University in Sellinsgrove, Pa.
