BRYN MAWR, Pa.–
Isabelle Ewart sank a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team held off the Bryn Mawr Owls for a 53-50 win on Monday, Jan. 15.
The Owls trailed by just one point after a layup with 12 ticks remaining on the clock before Ewart iced the game at the line. Swarthmore led for much of the contest, but the Owls remained within striking distance throughout.
Ewart narrowly missed out on a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds while
Audra Woodside chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.
Raina Williams and
Abigail Pirron each collected 10 boards and Swarthmore had three players (Ewart, Pirron,
Jayna Jones) finish with three steals apiece as it forced 23 Bryn Mawr turnovers. The Garnet scored 28 of its 53 points in the paint and bolstered its offense with a strong showing at the charity stripe (12-of-17).
The Owls scored the first points of the game, but a 7-0 run put the Garnet in control for the time being. Bryn Mawr countered to gain a three-point lead before
Hayley Raymond converted two from the stripe for a 14-15 game in favor of the hosts after the first frame.
Woodside and
Kendall Tribus each scored six points during the second quarter, including the final 12 of the frame as Swarthmore retook the lead. The contest remained tight in the third and fourth quarters as Bryn Mawr would not be put away. With 1:18 left in the contest, the Owls scored for a 49-48 count in favor of the Garnet. Ewart made four of four free-throw attempts down the stretch and Swarthmore claimed its first win of the season.
The women's basketball team travels to Haverford for a Hood Trophy rivalry game on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m.
