LANCASTER, Pa.—No. 9 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball dropped its road contest at No. 22 Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday afternoon 74-68, losing in conference play for the first time this season. Both the Garnet and the Diplomats are 13-2 overall this season and 7-1 in Centennial Conference play.
Swarthmore has not beaten Franklin & Marshall since 2013 and hasn't won in Lancaster since 2007.
Cam Wiley led Swarthmore with 17 points in the loss.
Nate Shafer added 15, and
Conor Harkins had 13. F&M senior Brandon Federici scored a game-high 28 points, and J.C. McGratch had 24 points and 11 rebounds. That duo accounted for 70.3 percent of F&M's scoring.
The Garnet led for a little more than two minutes in the beginning of the first half but was never able to regain the lead after that. However, Swarthmore stayed within striking distance of the Diplomats throughout the contest. The Garnet pulled back to within six points with a
Zack Yonda 3-pointer with two minutes left in the first half.
Three minutes into the second half,
Nate Shafer through down a dunk to pull Swarthmore within one basket at 39-36. However, F&M got some breathing room with a 14-2 run immediately after that.
The Garnet chipped away and F&M's double-digit lead and pulled within six points with 1:18 to play. Swarthmore simply ran out of time to complete a comeback.
Swarthmore had its worst shooting game of the season, going 38.5 percent from the floor, 10 percentage points worse than its season average, and committed a season-high 25 turnovers. The hosts only turned the ball over nine times but only shot 41.7 percent from the floor. F&M was award 38 attempts from the free-throw line, but shot just 50 percent from the stripe. Swarthmore went 22-for-29 from the free-throw line.
