MAYAGUEZ, P.R.–Playing its third game in four days, the Swarthmore College women's basketball team faced a 61-46 setback at the hands of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez Bulldogs on Friday, Jan. 12.
Despite a healthy 45-24 advantage in rebounds, the Garnet were hampered by turnovers, which the hosts were able to convert to 27 points on the other end.
Raina Williams led the team with 14 points, scoring in doubles figures for the third consecutive game.
Bridget Scott and
Kendall Tribus each chipped in nine points while Eleonore Moser led all players with nine boards, including three on the offensive glass.
The Bulldogs controlled the game early and led 18-10 after one frame. In the second, however, Williams provided a scoring spark as she finished 3-of-3 in the quarter and totaled eight points. With 3:11 remaining in the half, Swarthmore came within five, but it could not close the gap further and trailed by nine at the break.
Mayaguez built upon its lead in the third and although the Garnet were able to outscore the hosts 13-9 in the fourth, it was not enough to change the final outcome of the game.
The women's basketball team returns to Pennsylvania for a rescheduled road game at Bryn Mawr on Monday, January 15 at 5 p.m.
