SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College Men's Soccer (2-1) shut out the Widener University Pride 1-0 on Wednesday night to claim their 11th straight Derby Day win over the local rivals.
The game-winner came off the head of six-foot freshman
Charley Ward in the 83rd minute. Ward, getting his first minutes of the season, played for 13 minutes in the second half Wednesday. In the 83rd minute, a foul set up a Garnet free kick about 35 yards out.
Yuheng Wang, took the restart and drove the kick in towards the box, finding the head of Ward. Ward flicked the header on and found the back of the net to give Swarthmore the advantage.
The visitors took a pair of shots wide in the remainder of the contest, but couldn't tie the game. Widener took 16 shots in the game while Swarthmore finished with 13.
Oliver Steinglass kept the Pride at bay, recording three saves in goal for the Garnet.
Swarthmore resumes play on Saturday at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.
