Garnet Defend Home Court at Quad; Girard Named MVP

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College volleyball team did not drop a set as it claimed the title at the Swarthmore Quad Tournament on Saturday, Sep. 30.

The Garnet opened the morning with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-16 over local rival Widener and beat Cabrini, 25-22, 25-15, 26-24 in the de facto championship match.

Sarah Girard was named the Tournament MVP while Mehra den Braven also landed on the All-Tournament Team.

Swarthmore started off the day on the right foot with a blistering .317 hitting percentage against the visiting Pride. Sarah Wallace and den Braven combined for 29 kills, which was eight more than the entire Widener side. Girard recorded 16 digs as den Braven completed a double-double with 14. Guin Mesh served well for the second consecutive match, totaling three aces to complement 12 digs. Meanwhile, Wallace filled the box score with nine digs and four blocks.

Swarthmore took seven on the first eight points and never looked back. Wallace swung six kills in the frame and helped set the tone early.

The Garnet improved their attack in the second set, hitting .340 while limiting the Pride to a .053 clip. Den Braven and Girard combined for 15 of the team's 27 digs and Isabelle Andrews had two blocks in the middle. Swarthmore played from behind in the beginning, but quickly took the lead and distanced itself from the visitors with an 8-0 run to make it 22-10.

Widener had no answers in the third set as it tried to stave off elimination and Mesh put an exclamation point on the match with an ace to secure the sweep.

Entering the final match of the day, Cabrini boasted an 11-match winning streak, which was snapped in impressive fashion. The teams traded runs in the first and Swarthmore led late at 22-21 before kills by Olivia Leventhal and den Braven moved them to game point. Cabrini saved one, but could not stop den Braven, who recorded five kills in the set along with Wallace.

den Braven, Leventhal and Wallace did not commit a single error between them in the second to help lead the Garnet to a .366 attack percentage. Girard also made her presence known on the court with nine digs in the second frame alone as Swarthmore never trailed. In the final set of the tournament, Wallace swung eight kills and Elise Cummings served two of her four aces in the match. Cabrini closed gaps at several points during the set and evened the score at 24-24, saving two match points in the process. Wallace buried a kill, her 17th of the match, and notched an ace for a perfect to the weekend.

The volleyball team remains at home to host Eastern, Neumann and Catholic at the Garnet Quad Tournament next weekend, Oct. 6-7.
