SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Six different players scored as the Swarthmore College field hockey team cruised to a 9-0 win over Bryn Athyn on an unseasonably warm Wednesday afternoon.
Claire Perez,
Sierra Spencer and
Kathleen Carmichael all recorded two goals while
Riya Garg,
Sophie Peipher and
Lizzy Stant found the back of the net once.
Jane Blicher handed out three assists while Garg, Perez and
Ali Baratta had one apiece.
For the second consecutive game, the Garnet controlled the tempo of the game and maintained possession in its offensive half for most of the afternoon. Swarthmore held a 24-2 margin in shots on goal with a 14-1 advantage in corners.
Zelda Bank and
Ellory Laning combined for the shutout, with the latter preserving the clean sheet by making two saves in the final five minutes.
Swarthmore started strong with a series of corners and shots before scoring at 13:46 with Perez's tally that hit off a Bryn Athyn defender. Spencer added another and Carmichael piled on with a redirect to the top right corner. Peipher and Garg scored to close the second half with Swarthmore holding a comfortable 5-0 lead.
In the second, Spencer scored again with a nice juke around the goalie and Perez doubled up. Stant, who sang an impressive rendition of the National Anthem prior to the game, tipped in a ball at 56:57 and Carmichael completed the scoring on a penalty stroke.
The field hockey team hosts 11th-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Sep. 30 at 12 p.m.
